Mean to Me – Tonic

This song expresses perfectly the build of emotion in a relationship when someone is constantly hurting you for no apparent reason. It starts out kind of soft and slow making me think of those times when things are good with the abusive person. And then it builds up to a crescendo of anger and pain. And the song cycles this way between a sadness to anger. I think a lot of people and relate to that emotional roller coaster of pain and sadness.

There is a great stair stepping guitar sound during the chorus that is almost like scales but more rock and roll that I love.

The lyrics are amazing too. I love the first stanza in particular. It almost sounds like a poem.

There’s an empty place inside that is hurting me
A place that keeps my heart out on its own
A disconnected function of my wretchedness
That keeps me so hard pressed
It’s a place where words are spoken you
will never hear
A broken bridge of lines that just won’t come
An empty lung that won’t give the wind
to speak at me
How far can it be from home
