You Said Something – P.J. Harvey

I tend to be attracted to female vocals in music that are a little lower than the average female singer. Probably has something to do with my own voice being a little lower, I gravitate toward songs I can actually attempt to sing along to. Another thing I like about the vocals is they sound so organic despite this being the studio cut of the song.

The guitar is beautiful and simple in this song really enhancing the vocals without overshadowing them. I have to really focus to even hear the individual instruments because they blend so well together to support to singing. Even the drums which in songs like this can sometimes be overwhelming blend to punctuate but not call too much attention to themselves.

The lyrics are also so wonderful. They aren’t particularly deep but really draw a picture for me. I can imagine living the night that is being sung about. I love the middle stanza:

We lean against railings
Describing the colours
And the smells of our homelands
Acting like lovers
How did we get here?
To this point of living?
I held my breath
And you said something
